Our goal as audio system designers is to build a sound system that effectively delivers good quality, understandable and faithful sound to the entire audience. Even with the most pristine electrical signal chain, the space between a loudspeaker and the listener is the most destructive to intelligibility. Putting sound into a room dramatically changes how audiences perceives, understands and engage with the message delivered. Loudspeaker pattern control is one of the best methods for minimizing the destructive effects of rooms. We will describe the history and technologies used to ensure consistent off-axis frequency response and pattern control down to the lowest possible frequencies. Well-behaved loudspeakers are the key to reducing the diffuse field and improved ineligibility for every listener.
