Not Your Father’s P.A.: The Evolution of Live Sound Systems
Join live sound experts, Scott Sugden and Mark Frink, for a discussion on the technological evolution of live sound systems. From Hanley’s Woodstock point-and-shoot cinema separates to ‘90s point-source modular “stereo” arrays to today’s modern line arrays and multichannel designs, live sound has seen sea-change 21st century technologies that have raised expectations. Line source behavior principles, outlined by Dr. Christian Heil’s Wavefront Sculpture Technology (WST) criteria, showed that for higher frequencies, a compression driver “waveguide” with a tall, thin isophasic opening was required. V-DOSC was imitated by various pro audio manufacturers, but eventually replaced by the K-1. With the introduction L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound at 2016 InfoComm, immersive sound became an achievable feature of live sound. Again, many pro audio manufacturers followed suit. Finally, the L Series brings further modularity with Progressive Ultra-dense Line Source (PULS) technology along with active cardioid technology, resulting in reduced weight, size and deployment and promoting large-scale immersive multi-channel live sound systems.
