Introduction to PIM for Large Multicast Networks

Tue, June 16

We've learned how to configure our networks for managing multicast traffic using IGMP Snooping and a Querier.  However, there is another way to manage this traffic, Protocol Independent Multicast or PIM.  Often, audiovisual deployments try to avoid using PIM for good reason.  Sometimes, PIM can solve problems, and when multicast traffic needs to be routed to different networks, PIM might be the right solution.

Highly acclaimed from Infocomm '25, this session will be similar to last year's session with a few extra bits of information.  This session will differentiate between PIM and the "usual" way multicast traffic is managed.  It will introduce the main concepts of PIM and help identify what types of network equipment are required to run PIM.  The session will also focus on why PIM should not be used in most circumstances.

PIM is not the go-to method for audiovisual multicast networks, but it can be a tool in the belt.  Knowing when to suggest PIM can help improve conversations with the network managers.  This information, while not specific enough to teach configuration, will give participants the vocabulary and background to have a conversation about when or if to use PIM.
